Merle was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a seasonal site at Little Bear where he spent a great deal of time camping and fishing over the years. Merle was a long time member of the Strasbourg Eastshore Wildlife Federation. He was a member of the Nokomis gun club. Merle taught firearm safety for many years. There are many people in the surrounding communities that have received their hunters’ safety from Merle. Merle traveled all over North America competing in air rifle and rifle marksman competitions and came home with many medals and trophies.

Merle was a member of the Nokomis fire department and served as fire chief. Merle had a stroke on July 28, 2010. This stroke changed his life incredibly. Merle got his motor skills back but left him without speech. Even with this difficulty he was still able to do the things he loved camping and fishing at Little Bear, and rifle competitions. Merle had a passion for forging knives. Even with his loss of speech this did not hold him back from taking knife building classes in Regina. He put many hours into creating some beautiful knives. Merle also enjoyed astronomy, spending many hours looking at the stars.
